Be aware, this place takes CASH ONLY! We drove over two hours to get there, and were refused rental 'cause we have not had enough cash to cover the rental cost. We were short of just a few dollars, and unfortunately did not have debit card on us to make use of ATM. We explained the situation to the owner and politely asked to take another form of payment for the rest of the amount, such as credit card, check or PayPal, or anything else. Owner was rude and just would not budge, kept on saying "No, we don't do that". So we basically had to turn around and leave. Very disappointing! Not sure how he runs his business with attitude like that.

Tip-A-Thumb offers very reasonably priced canoe rentals and great customer service. They rent 3 person Canoes, single and double Kayaks. A 45-minute canoe ride from their location will take you to the beautiful beach in Port Crescent State park on Lake Huron. Because Tip-A-Thumb rents canoes out for an entire day, and not at an hourly rate you can canoe to the beach, spend the day there swimming in Lake Huron, and canoe back. The current of the river is very mild, so it's a relaxing canoe ride both directions.
I also picked up a good deal of trash along the river, and stored it in the kayak until we returned. Upon returning, I told the guys working about this and asked if they had somewhere I could toss it all. Told me not to even worry about it and they took care of it all.
The older gentleman, whom i assume runs the place, was even faithful enough to take us on our word to return with payment AFTER our trip, even considering that we had to go all the way back to Pt Austin to find an ATM (its cash only here). You don't see that sort of trust in people today.
It's so rare today to find a breathtaking experience that is both so simple and affordable. For just $20 you can rent a kayak and absolutely disappear for an entire day. No paperwork or jumping through hoops of fire. You also don't have to worry about driving all the way here only to find that they aren't renting that day, like some other rental places in the area. The river is very calm and they're always renting here.
Perfect place to kayak. There is almost no current in the river and it takes you right out to a big sand bar and then lake Huron. beautiful spot to just play Frisbee and enjoy the day.
